FireChat Introduces A Way To Chat “off the grid” With Mobile Phones.
FireChat is one the next upcoming messenger apps that lets the users communicate to a nearby iOS device without the necessary need for Internet or mobile phone data. It show other people near the users who are local to them, say the person is in the same camping trip, and the user can share images using Apple’s Multipeer Connectivity Framework, which uses up WiFi or Bluetooth to connect two or more devices. AirDrop will need to be turned on first to get it all to work, and this also includes every iPhone 5 models, fourth-generation iPad, The iPad mini, and fifth-generation iPod touch models.
“We may think that we need the Internet for everything. FireChat proves that’s not always the case,” said Micha Benoliel, Open Garden’s CEO. “People ask me: how does this work without an Internet connection? Thanks to the Multipeer Connectivity Framework introduced in iOS 7, we are now able to deliver a best-in-class peer-to-peer chat experience to iOS users.”
The application can also be ran in standard internet connectivity, which will continue the conversation running with other FireChat users from any place around the world.
Logins and accounts are not required nor any setups. Everything is open, which can be both a good thing and a terrible for others. There are no ways for one to filter who is allowed to contact the user, so at certain places one might be visiting like a sports arena, one will be easily deluged with abuse. The range of the application is around 30 feet.
The idea behind Firechat is quite good, setting up a quick network for a type of event and chatting away with guest and friends is really simple to do, no setup or complicated configuration. Although some have suggested a way to turn off the global chat, mostly to filter out abusers.
FireChat is a very clever invention and should be giving a try or kept in case of emergency when out in the wilderness with no WiFi and the only way to contact any nearby friends with the messenger. FirChat isn’t a universal app, unfortunately its a new hardware that can currently only run on Airdrop.
The FireChat App is available for free from the App Store on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch or at www.AppStore.com.
