Google’s Project Tango Partner Up with NASA For Space Robots.

Google’s own Project Tango smartphone isnt just some ordinary smartphone. it contains some of the most sophisticated hardware around, none that’s currently contained within any other device on the market today, similar to that of the smartphone’s Myriad 1 vision processor chip which is capable of making a quarter of a million 3D measurements per second, this is exactly what NASA has needed in order to get there Sphere robot to be fully autonomous.

Spheres.

The team behind Project Tango, ATAP over at Google has recently announced a partnership between them and NASA, in order to create an autonomous robot. Utilizing the technology developed for Project Tango, the Spheres Robot will be able to do task astronauts would previously had to do themselves. The robot comes equipped with a Project Tango smartphone, in order to map its current location so it can move around autonomously. The Sphere robots will also be able to navigate through a space station, and perform some of the task that were previously chores done by Astronauts. They will be able to construct a 3D map of their environment, so they are able to move around without running into walls constantly.

Project Tango works by utilizing a motion tracking device and depth sensors implemented into their backsides. When the device is moved around, the phones special sensors will detect their orientation and what is currently around them. With the data the phone will go on to create a 3D map of it surroundings.

Ara.

Google has recently been at working a project known as Ara, another project that also coming out form ATAP team at Google. Project Ara is another device that could benefit them in this situation. Project Ara main concept is a modular smartphone that can be updated one piece at a time. This is the ultimate smartphone for any individual who loves to customize everything within their devices, this would also be great for a company like NASA who badly need devices for a very specific purposes.

Project Tango’s amazing hardware is truly one of the most perfect uses for NASA’s Spheres, which could also be included along side Project Ara’s device. The could even offer all the same special features that are contained within Project Tango, with the option to upgrade and change piece they may have to switch out.
